Launched today, Alessandro Michele’s latest Gucci Décor campaign unfolds in a perfectly manicured topiary garden – and reflects the creative director’s eccentric, whimsical tastes
Alessandro Michele has the kind of aesthetic sensibility that is instantly recognisable. Since his appointment as creative director of Gucci in 2015, every facet of the brand’s output – whether on the runway, the red carpet, or in his joyous, often surprising campaigns – is defined by a decadent, whimsical, and inherently maximalist sensibility. An avid collector of antiques, Michele’s Instagram is littered with neoclassical pottery, Marie Antoinette-style sofas, marble busts, and chipped paintings. “It is quite difficult to define my universe – or any other kind of universe – in just a few words,” Michele told AnOther back in 2017. “My Gucci universe is inclusive. It fragments to recreate in a contemporary way.”
Thankfully for us, the Gucci universe is not only limited to clothes and accessories – the Italian house launched Gucci Décor in 2017, a homeware line “designed to bring the eclectic, romantic aesthetic of the house to life in a way that enables customers to creatively dress their own spaces”. The latest collection, which launched today, features a range of nature-inspired crockery; there are floral candles and teapots, ashtrays adorned with butterflies, sun and moon drink coasters, and much more.
Presented in a typically eccentric fashion, the campaign – shot by Max Siedentopf – is Mad Hatter’s Tea Party meets Edward Scissorhands; set in a perfectly manicured topiary garden, items from the collection are displayed amongst sofa- and lamp-shaped hedges, added a twist of the surreal while blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior.
